Rain and Thunder Honors Mary Daly
We honor the life and work of Mary Daly who passed away on January 3rd, 2010. Mary was a radical lesbian feminist philosopher, theologian, and rabble rouser. She wrote a number of significant feminist texts including: Beyond God the Father (1973), Gyn/Ecology: The Metaethics of Radical Feminism (1978), Pure Lust: Elemental Feminist Philosophy (1984) and Webster’s First New Intergalactic Wickedary of the English Language (1987). As Susan Bridle who interviewed Mary for Enlightenment Magazine many years ago put it, "Daly has, for more than three decades, committed her every waking breath to a single purpose: seeing, naming and dissecting the structures of patriarchy in order to liberate women's minds, bodies and spirits from its oppression."
A private burial will take place at the historic Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge , Massachusetts . A public memorial event will be scheduled for spring 2010 in the Boston area. It was Mary’s hope that those who wish to celebrate her life gather in local groups to read her work and discuss its impact on their lives.
A website, www.marydaly.org , has also been set up to honor Mary’s life and work. It provides information on memorials being organized nationally and internationally and gives individuals the opportunity to post their thoughts and reflections. The site also includes links to various obituaries and commentaries.
Donations in memory of Mary Daly may be made to the The Nature Conservancy, which protects the natural world she loved.
Rain and Thunder has included a tribute to Mary Daly in our Spring 2010 issue (Issue #46). Check out "The Courage to Sin Big: A Mary Daly Tribute -- Women Reflect and Share on the Life of Mary Daly" by clicking here.
Peace to Mary Daly on her passing. May her life and work live on.
